The cinematograph was an amazing invention, right? It was patented back in 1895 by Auguste and Louis Lumière, the pioneers of the movie scene. The early movies were like 15 to 20 meters long—talk about old school! That huge object found its way into global entertainment, shaking things up big time. After a lot of changes, it morphed into those VHS tapes that took over people’s living rooms, and then shrunk down into those sleek DVDs. And now? Well, all our audiovisual needs are just a button away on our trusty Smart TV.

Can you imagine still freaking out at the movies like those folks did watching "Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat" thinking that the train was going to bust through the screen? Nowadays, it takes a creepy doll to show up right when the eerie music stops to make us flinch just a little bit. At home, not even that makes us jump.

KNOWING THE PAST TO UNCOVER THE FUTURE

Today, the scientific and tech world has zoomed ahead so fast that stuff from 20, 30, or 40 years ago (even further back) feels ancient. But truth is, progress only happens when we peek back and learn from the good ol' days. That's where the knowledge chain comes in, feeding off everything humanity has picked up over the years.

Every day, billions of people are pushing boundaries in their fields, thanks to the groundwork laid by those who came before. Science and tech that was once pure science fiction. We wouldn't have the vaccines we do now if Dr. Edward Jenner hadn't tinkered with cowpox pustules back in the day. And forget about coding without Grace Murray Hopper's groundbreaking compiler that turned math symbols into binary code. Hats off to the people who invented the wheel and those who started a fire for the first time too, we owe a lot to them!

We could keep listing examples till next New Year's, but here's the deal: all the progress we've made lately, all the cool stuff at our fingertips, it's all thanks to what our ancestors packed into our knowledge backpack.

DRUMROLL, PLEASE…

In this edition of BizkaiaTech Magazine, we're diving into tech that's shaping or going to shape the world. Tech that's been touched by billions of hands along the way. We'll chat about incredible projects happening right here, in Biscay, global tech that's part of our everyday lives, and hear from some very known people in the scene.

It's important to recognize what's been done so far to keep the ball rolling. And also, so future generations can look back at the work we're doing now and think, "Dang, they really set us up for success!" Because the future's in our hands.

So, next Friday night, when you cozy up in your fave PJs, pop those microwave popcorn, and dive into Netflix, tip your hat to the Lumière brothers and thank whoever you want because they didn't go all-in on farming instead.
