Welcome to the ninth edition of BizkaiaTech Magazine! Although we have discussed many topics related to science and technology, let's take a look back to our first issue titled Kuantum’s spelled with a “K”. Exactly, we are going to talk about quantum again. The future we imagined three years ago is now much closer to becoming a reality thanks to the tireless efforts of everyone involved in this field.

Biscay is also making giant strides in the quantum field, building a quantum ship that is about to set sail. So, and because we want to debunk the myth that “sequels are never good,” we’re going to board that ship and set off into the wonderful and fascinating quantum world once again.

ON TO ANOTHER THING

Perhaps the best definition of quantum comes from Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman: “If you think you understand quantum mechanics, you don’t understand quantum mechanics.” Although this prolific physicist was referring solely to quantum mechanics, it is an axiom that could well apply to all quantum branches. In the first edition, we tried to explain the basic concepts of the quantum curriculum: C for quantum computing; E for quantum entanglement; S for superposition, and so on. This time, we won't stay on the basics; we will go much further.

The reason why is very simple: quantum physics has the potential to change the world. Understanding how subatomic particles work, behave, and interact can help us understand many other things in our daily lives. It can change everything: it can help us in the field of medicine by creating quantum sensors that detect diseases very early and test and approve drugs at unprecedented speeds. Quantum computing will allow us to solve problems that classical computers can’t. Even space and its exploration, among many other things, will be affected by these technologies! Blessed and wonderful particles!

But we must have (a lot of) patience, as all the mentioned changes are far from becoming a reality in this moment. Quantum technologies are still emerging technologies, and we are in a very early stage, where the results, at this moment, are not the most important. It is a long journey, full of technical obstacles and complications, fueled by people from different disciplines united by a hopeful future full of opportunities.

This is not something that is thought of only here in Biscay. Quantum technologies are not just a trend; they are studied and pursued by some of the world's most important companies. Google, Microsoft, Intel, IBM, AWS, Fujitsu, and Telefónica are the perfect examples of companies investing in this area, contributing a large part of the total investment that this field is receiving, which, according to Qureca, is $40 billion worldwide. Furthermore, they predict that this investment will reach $106 billion in the next 16 years. Not small change, indeed.

DIVE INTO THE QUANTUM WORLD AGAIN

Therefore, and because of everything being done here in this regard, we believe that the first magazine, aka Kuantum’s spelled with a “K”, needs a successor, someone to tell us about quantum mechanics and the most interesting emerging projects in a more detailed and profound way.

The star of this nineth magazine is the ecosystem driven by the Government of Biscay, which aims to build a local and international quantum industry. In this magazine, you will get to know all the agents involved in this: universities, laboratories, startups, major international tech companies, and corporations exploring emerging technologies to boost their businesses.

Since we cannot forget those who may not have had the opportunity to hold the first edition of the magazine, we will also explain some basic concepts that may have escaped us. This way, even the back row of the class will be interested in everything that follows.

The future is another branch that we at BizkaiaTech Magazine love to explore. Quantum technologies are emerging technologies, which is why talking about the future seems almost an obligation to us. We have dared to imagine a home with personal quantum computers and to anticipate a real proof of concept that is already underway and will optimize the operation of the Bizkaibus network.

One of the most essential things in this topic (and in all) are the people behind all this excitement: the quantum talent. Thanks to several universities in the region, we will have the opportunity to discover the keys to recruiting, training, and discovering all these people who, both now and in the future, will be crucial to the entire quantum revolution.

Finally, as the icing on the cake, we will have some entertainment, as this edition includes a quantum board game for the whole family to learn some quantum laws. Who knows, maybe someone will be inspired to become an expert in quantum as a result...

Put on your raincoat and hold on to something nearby, because this quantum journey is about to begin!
