How to get here

  • By car

    From Bilbao, take the road towards Gernika-Lumo then the by-pass towards Lekeitio, and follow the BI 635 road to the Barrutia roundabout. Then take the BI 2238. After driving through the district of Idokiliz, turn right onto the BI 4244 and follow the road to its end, where you will find a parking area.

    From Lekeitio, follow the BI 2238. After driving through the main village of Kortezubi, turn left onto the BI 4244 and follow the road to its end, where you will find a parking area.

Rules and recommendations

The path into the Forest

The forest can only be reached on foot. No motor vehicles are allowed on the path that leads to the Oma Forest.

Approximate time needed for the visit

The path from Santimamiñe to The Oma Forest is 2.8 km long and takes about 50 minutes to walk. The itinerary through the 34 artworks within the forest is around 1.5 km long. Then you must consider how long you wish to spend looking at the 34 artworks that make up the Oma Forest: they are laid out along a path of around 1.5 km. And at the end of your visit you must not forget the 2.8 km back to your starting point.

Recommendations

  • Wear comfortable clothes and footwear suitable for hiking.
  • Carry water: there are no drinking fountains in the forest.
  • Follow the signposts at all times.

Accessibility

The Oma Forest is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.

Rules in the forest

  • Always keep to the paths marked through the Forest.
  • Use the designated rest and picnic areas. You may not eat anywhere else.
  • Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times.

It is forbidden:

  • Do not touch the paintings or the trees on which they are painted.
  • Do not drop litter. There is no refuse collection service.
  • Camping is prohibited.
  • The Forest is closed to visitors in stormy weather and in high winds. Check the local weather forecast before your visit, using the Euskalmet website.
  • Smoking is prohibited. Do not light a fire of any kind in the Forest.
  • It is prohibited to ride a bicycle through the forest.

Places for a meal or a drink

The village of Kortezubi and the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve have open-air picnic spots as well as bars and restaurants offering a wide range of options.
