An Orchestra in Nature

The Oma Forest, one of the best known works of Basque artist Agustín Ibarrola, belongs to the movement known as Art and Nature, which emerged in the late 1960s and sought to place works of art in nature, using the landscape as a backdrop, support and raw material.

The work is located in Kortezubi (Bizkaia), and comprises various groups of geometrical figures and motifs painted on the trunks of Monterey pine trees. Its use of a natural, living canvas, its play of two- and three-dimensional images, the way in which it places visitors and their journey of discovery at the core of the art and the wide range of reactions that it inspires make this a benchmark of the Art and Nature movement in general and of Basque art in particular.
