The Santimamiñe caves

This is one of the most iconic prehistoric cultural sites in Bizkaia. It contains a 'shrine' decorated with painted animals including bison, goats and horses. It is a UNESCO Human Heritage Site.

Guided tours are available: they include access to the cave entrance and a 3D projection that takes visitors on a virtual tour of the interior.

The Basondo Wildlife Shelter

Located near the Santimamiñe Caves in the municipality of Kortezubi, this shelter for endangered animals stands on 60,000 m2 of meadows and woodland, and is home to most of the major local species of wild animals including roe deer, red deer and wild boar, plus a variety of birds of prey, owls and migratory birds.

The Euskal Herria Museum

Located in the Palacio Alegría, a palazzo in the historical town centre of Gernika-Lumo, this museum features exhibits that provide an understanding of the historical and cultural significance of the Basque Country.

Gernika Assembly House

The Assembly House and the Tree of Gernika stand in the historical heart of Gernika-Lumo. They are living symbols of the history of the Basque people. The building is the home of the highest-ranking institutional body in Bizkaia. It stands beside the oak which is the symbolic meeting point for all the areas that make up the Basque Country, with their shared cultural and ethnographic traditions, and as such it transcends political boundaries.

The Gernika Peace Museum

Located on the Plaza de los Fueros Square in the centre of the town, beside the Cultural Centre and just 50 m from the tourist information office and the church of Santa María, this museum is dedicated to the culture of peace, and was inspired by the tragic bombing of Gernika in 1937.

Urdaibai bird center

This is an observatory open to the public where people can watch birds and their migrations. It is located in the marshland at the heart of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve.

The Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve covers 22,000 hectares and comprises a mosaic of cliffs, mountains, beaches, rivers and underground streams teeming with animal and human life.
