We are in the midst of an industrial revolution driven by nanotechnology, biotechnology, genomics, and, of course, quantum technology. In the last one, quantum sensors, communications, networks, and both quantum hardware and software are standing out.

THE NEW QUANTUM ERA

We can now use quantum computers and leverage their incredible capacity to solve complex problems that classical computers cannot handle. This encompasses areas such as economics, finance, chemistry, medicine, logistics, energy, and agriculture. Welcome to the “quantum decade”! Here, quantum computing is ready to tackle larger and more complex business problems. Quantum computing is not just a dream; it is a reality we must embrace, bringing significant advantages in terms of energy consumption.

BEYOND PROOF OF CONCEPTS

For these applications to be truly useful, they must go beyond proof of concepts or research algorithms. They need to be rigorously developed with engineering principles and based on hybrid systems that integrate quantum computing with classical enterprise systems. The true advantage comes from the integration of classical computing, quantum computing, and artificial intelligence.

To achieve this, we need multidisciplinary teams that include physicists, mathematicians, systems engineers, developers, project managers, security and quality specialists, among others. These teams will handle diverse tasks such as designing new algorithms, system analysis, solution design, programming, testing, validation, and deployment.

THE CHALLENGE OF QUANTUM EDUCATION

In the development of hybrid (quantum-classical) systems, which we believe will be one of the most relevant fields for providing solutions to the business sector, we observe that most academic curricula do not include quantum computing. However, recently, an updated version of the European framework for quantum technology competencies has been published, addressing the necessary knowledge for system development.

Some universities have launched master’s degrees that include topics on quantum computing within a broader curriculum on quantum technology. It would also be ideal to incorporate subjects like quantum computing, quantum programming, quantum security, and quantum artificial intelligence into existing computer engineering degrees.

PROFESSIONAL RETRAINING: AN URGENT NEED

Given the significant deficit of quantum talent today, we believe it is crucial to retrain those who develop classical systems, both those currently working and those finishing their studies. Quantum computing has a significant learning curve, greater than the transition from structured to object-oriented programming or the adoption of DevOps, but it is important to work towards overcoming it.

Ideally, specific training should be organized to initially acquire knowledge about the different types of quantum systems, the fundamentals of quantum programming, algorithms, languages, environments, and development platforms. This foundation can serve to build a comprehensive roadmap in quantum computing. In a second course, practices of quantum software engineering can be deepened, followed by aspects related to quantum artificial intelligence, and so on. This way, different concepts of quantum computing can be assimilated and integrated into various areas of software engineering.

WE ARE ALREADY UNDERWAY: INITIAL RESULTS

At the University of Deusto, we have already launched a first pilot course with great success. Additionally, we are driving several key initiatives in the Faculty of Engineering to promote quantum technologies, in collaboration with the University of Castilla-La Mancha and the Quantum Ecosystem of Bizkaia. These collaborations are fundamental to consolidate and expand our training activities and programs. For example:

Promotion of Industrial Doctorates in Quantum Technologies:

We have created a specific program for doctorates in quantum technologies, aiming to train high-level researchers who can lead innovation and development projects in this emerging area. This program is carried out in collaboration with companies and technological centers of the Basque Science, Technology, and Innovation Network, further strengthening our multidisciplinary and excellence-focused approach.

Introduction to Quantum Computing Course:

This course, aimed at both students and active professionals, covers the fundamentals of quantum computing, including theory, algorithms, and practical applications. It has been excellently received and has served as an entry point for many interested in the field.

In short, we believe it is time for different actors in the fields of science, technology, engineering, business, and administration to join efforts and synergies to foster high-value-added knowledge in quantum technologies. This will contribute to the advancement of regions and ensure the highest levels of competitiveness, sustainability, and well-being for society.
