Legal conditions of use

All the documentation of the Regional Historical Archive of Biscay (RHAB) may be freely accessed, except:

  • Documentation covered by prevailing legislation on access (Article 57 of Law 16/85 of the PHE [Historical Heritage Act]; Article 19 of Decree 232/2000 of the Regulation on Archive Services and the regulatory rules of the Basque Regional Documentary Heritage).
  • Documentation in a poor state of conservation or restoration (Article 62 of Law 16/85 of the PHE [Historical Heritage Act]).
  • Documentation undergoing reorganisation.
  • Special resources (scrolls, glass plates, etc.).

In the latter three cases, express authorisation will be required to consult the documents.

The consultation of resources is individual, and each researcher will be responsible for the documentation they receive. Hence, it is absolutely prohibited to consult one unit of the facilities by two or more researchers or exchange documents with other users.

For reasons of security and conservation, researchers many only use individual sheets of paper, pencils or laptops, and may not use fountain pens or marker pens when consulting documents.

Researchers that handle documentation are asked to do so with the utmost care, without altering their order in the file or in the box. Under no circumstance may documents be numbered or marked.
