Consulting the thesaurus

The Eurovoc thesaurus can be consulted either by carrying out a search for descriptors and non-descriptors in the thesaurus using a term or part of a term, or by browsing the thesaurus.

Browsing the thesaurus

The navigation option allows you to make a search by subject and to display the EUROVOC hierarchy.

Clicking on this option displays a list of the 21 subject areas and 127 microthesauri. From this list you can select a microthesaurus to display its tree structure.

Within a microthesaurus all the descriptors are hyperlinks: click on a descriptor to get its complete semantic environment: microthesaurus, scope note, non-descriptors, broader and narrower terms, associative relationship(s). Semantic environment complete: non-descriptors, definition and application notes, associative relationships, generic and specific terms.

"Terms" option

The "terms" option takes you to an alphabetical list of all the descriptors and non-descriptors in the microthesaurus in question; you can then select a descriptor from this list. The term "USE" is used to relate non-descriptors to the corresponding descriptors. To return to the display of the microthesaurus, click on "microthesaurus".

Looking for a term

You can look for a descriptor or a non-descriptor using an expression, a term or part of a term. Enter the term(s) in the singular, then click on "Search".

You will then either get the descriptor directly with its semantic relationships, or be given a list of all the descriptors and non-descriptors that contain the expression you entered. In this list you can then select a descriptor to see its semantic relationships: microthesaurus, scope note, non-descriptors, broader and narrower terms, associative relationship(s).

Practical tips
  • Enter the term(s) in the singular.
  • If your search is unsuccessful, try with a single term or a synonym.
  • If this is still produces no results, try a search by subject by clicking on the option "navigation".

Descriptor page: semantic relationships of a descriptor

After carrying out a search or selecting a term, you get a "descriptor page" which shows the semantic relationships of the descriptor. The symbols used are explained in the table below, and you will find an explanation of how to use semantic relationships in the Introduction to EUROVOC.

You can display this descriptor page in another language by using the language menu.

"Translations" option

It is possible to have the descriptor displayed in all 11 languages on the same page by clicking on the "translations" option. To return to the descriptor page, click on "descriptor".

N.B: The descriptors and microthesauri are always hyperlinks, which makes it easy for you to navigate through the thesaurus.
