The Bizkaia Provincial Council has shared its progress in promoting the transition to long-term care in the territory at two international forums held in the last two weeks in Rome and Brussels on longevity and the future of care.

The first of these, the United Nations Ministerial Conference for Europe (UNECE) on Ageing held in Rome, brought together some 365 participants, including 43 country delegations, with over 30 countries represented at ministerial level, as well as representatives of European and international organisations, researchers, elderly people, and non-governmental organisations representing them.

The conference concluded with the adoption of the declaration "A full life throughout life" which, for the first time, recognises the need to ensure access to long-term care and support for carers and families. The declaration also includes two other commitments: to promote active and healthy ageing throughout life, and to mainstream ageing in order to promote a society for all ages.

The second event was the seminar organised by the World Bank in Brussels, which invited the Provincial Council to present the public policies being developed in Bizkaia in the field of long-term care, at a key moment for the European Commission in this area.

The Deputy for Social Policy, Sergio Murillo, shared in both forums the efforts that Bizkaia is making in the transition of long-term care through the deployment of the Carers’ Statute, and the driving force projects that have been launched, especially the transformation of residences into living units and the etxeTIC model centres to support people staying at home.
