Bilbao Mayor Juan Mari Aburto, Bizkaia Provincial Council Head of Tourism and External Promotion Asier Alea, Basque Government Head of Physical Activity and Sports Jon Redondo, EPCR Director General Vincent Gaillard, European Professional Club Rugby Ambassador Dimitri Yachvili, Spanish Rugby Federation Chair Alfonso Feijoo and Mick Hogan, Director General of Newcastle Rugby Limited, were on hand to unveil the logo for the European Champions Cup and Challenge Cup, the finals of which will be held in Bilbao on 11 and 12 May 2018.
"This is a very exciting time for European professional club rugby, and a historical decision that offers rugby fans an exceptional new experience", stated Vincent Gaillard. "We are delighted to welcome cooperation from the various local authorities here and delighted too with the visual image of the finals. We now have a sound foundation on which to start selling tickets next month".
For his part Asier Alea, Head of Tourism and External Promotion at the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, stressed that this was excellent news for the area, and hoped that the event would serve to strengthen ties between Bizkaia and the countries taking part: the UK, Ireland, France and Italy. "We will be investing all our effort, enthusiasm and dedication to give the fans and teams the welcome that they deserve. Rugby does not have a huge following in Bizkaia but we have much more in common that might be thought. This stadium and this century-old team represent much more than just football: they form part of our identity as the people of Bizkaia. They closely linked with our principles, our values and our traditions. They are linked to colours and to identity. And that is what rugby is too."
